About the role

The Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum Frankfurt (Department of Terrestrial Zoology) is hiring a Research Scientist and Curator of Herpetology (ref. REF.01-26026). The role is a Tenure Track position, initially limited to six years with the option for permanent extension. It combines original research in herpetological evolution, systematics, or ecology with stewardship of one of Europe’s major herpetological collections. Salary is set according to TV-H E13. Deadline: 28 June 2026.

Senckenberg is a member of the Leibniz Association and operates a network of research institutions and natural history museums across Germany.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and publish original research on amphibian and/or reptile evolution, systematics, or ecology using methods such as bioacoustics, molecular and genomic approaches, modern imaging, or machine learning.
  • Preserve, curate, and develop the herpetological collection; lead its digital transformation.
  • Acquire third-party research funding through grant proposals to DFG, EU, and other funders.
  • Guide and mentor technical and scientific staff within the herpetology section.
  • Contribute to public outreach activities and represent Senckenberg at scientific meetings.
  • Build and strengthen national and international research collaborations.

Requirements

  • PhD in Biology or a closely related field, with a clear specialisation in herpetology.
  • Internationally recognised expertise in amphibian or reptile systematics, including species-level knowledge.
  • Familiarity with modern collection-based research methods (molecular, bioacoustic, imaging).
  • Demonstrated publication record appropriate to career stage.
  • Excellent written and oral English; willingness to learn German is appreciated.

Nice to have

  • Track record of securing external research grants.
  • Experience managing or digitising natural history collections.
  • Background in conservation biology or disease ecology (e.g. chytrid fungus, Bsal).
  • Prior experience leading a small team.
