The deadline (7 Jun 2026) has passed.
About the role
The Division of Water Environment Technology in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology is recruiting a doctoral student to advance digitalisation of drinking water treatment. The project deploys real-time sensor networks and data pipelines at pilot-scale Swedish utilities, then analyses the resulting datasets with machine learning methods to improve treatment control. Reference 20260208. Application deadline: 7 June 2026.
Responsibilities
- Deploy and evaluate real-time sensor systems at pilot-scale drinking water treatment facilities in collaboration with Swedish utility partners.
- Build data workflows and analytical pipelines for continuous monitoring of treatment parameters.
- Analyse large sensor datasets using machine learning and statistical methods.
- Conduct laboratory validation experiments alongside field pilots to ground-truth sensor readings.
- Co-author peer-reviewed publications in water technology and environmental engineering journals.
- Assist with teaching for up to 20% of contracted hours.
Requirements
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in environmental engineering, water engineering, chemical engineering, applied data science, or a closely related field.
- Interest in digitalisation and data-driven approaches applied to environmental systems.
- Programming skills for data analysis in Python, MATLAB, R, or similar.
- Good written and spoken English.
Nice to have
- Prior thesis or project work in water treatment, water quality monitoring, or environmental sensing.
- Experience with IoT sensor systems or embedded data acquisition.
- Knowledge of Swedish, or willingness to learn for utility partner communication.
