About the role

The Department of Operations at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Groningen, is hiring a full-time postdoctoral researcher in energy systems modelling and optimization. The position sits within the Energy Transition and Climate Change research theme and contributes to European Commission projects and Dutch Research Council (NWO) national projects focused on hydrogen-based energy logistics. Responsibilities

  • Build and refine energy systems models covering hydrogen production, storage, and distribution across European contexts.
  • Apply mathematical programming methods to multi-energy carrier logistics problems.
  • Contribute to European Commission project deliverables and NWO project reports.
  • Publish in peer-reviewed operations research and energy systems journals.
  • Co-supervise master’s and PhD students within the department.
  • Collaborate with Dutch and European project partners.

Requirements

  • PhD in operations research, industrial engineering, applied mathematics, or a closely related quantitative field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in mathematical programming (linear programming, mixed-integer programming, or stochastic optimization).
  • Prior experience with energy systems modelling, particularly diverse energy carrier mixes.
  • Strong publication record relative to career stage.
  • Fluent English (written and spoken).

Nice to have

  • Experience with hydrogen supply chain models or sector coupling.
  • Knowledge of European energy market structure and regulations.
  • Proficiency in Python, Julia, GAMS, or CPLEX.
  • Experience working on EU-funded collaborative research projects.
