Senior Quantum Software Developer

About the role

Permanent senior developer position at Fraunhofer IAO in Stuttgart, focused on quantum software for the Competence Center Quantum Computing Baden-Württemberg. The role is hands-on engineering on quantum SDKs, hybrid quantum-classical workflows, and applications for industrial partners. Deadline 7 June 2026.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement quantum software components, SDK extensions, transpilers, hybrid solver frameworks.
• Build hybrid quantum-classical pipelines that connect to existing high-performance computing infrastructure.
• Work directly with industrial partners on production-grade quantum applications.
• Mentor junior researchers and contribute to the Center’s technical strategy.

Requirements

• Master’s degree (Diplom or equivalent) in computer science, physics, mathematics, or a related field.
• Several years of professional software development experience, Python is the primary language.
• Practical experience with at least one quantum SDK (Qiskit, Cirq, PennyLane).
• Fluent English; German is a plus.

Nice to have

• Doctoral degree in a quantum computing-adjacent topic.
• Experience contributing to open-source quantum software.
• Knowledge of compiler design, optimisation, or numerical linear algebra at scale.
• Background in industrial software engineering, CI/CD, testing, software architecture.
