Questions to ask before accepting a scholarship
An award is a commitment, sometimes for years. Before you accept, get clear answers to the questions below, in writing where you can.
What it actually covers
- Tuition: full, partial, or capped? For how many years?
- Living stipend: how much, how often, and does it match the city's cost of living?
- Travel, visa, insurance, and settling-in costs: covered or not?
- What is not covered that you will have to fund yourself?
The conditions
- Any obligation to return home, work back, or bond for a period?
- What happens to funding if you change course, pause, or underperform?
- Can you work part-time alongside it, and does the visa allow it?
- Is renewal each year automatic or conditional?
The fit
- Does this course and country actually serve your longer-term goal?
- If you hold another offer, how do the two genuinely compare?
- What is the deadline to accept, and can you get more information before it?
If a provider pressures you to accept immediately or asks for a fee to "secure" the award, treat it as a warning sign and verify on the official source.
