Reply to a rejection and ask for feedback

A reply is not required, but a brief and gracious one leaves a good impression if you apply again, and it is the right moment to ask whether feedback is available. Many large schemes say they cannot give individual feedback; check their guidance first and do not press if they say no.

Subject: [Award name] [year], [application ID]

Dear [Name / selection committee],

Thank you for letting me know the outcome of my application for the [award name]. I am disappointed, but grateful for the time the committee spent on it.

[Optional:] If it is possible, I would value any brief feedback on my application, in particular on [the essays / my research proposal / the interview], as I hope to apply again or to similar awards. I understand if this is not something you are able to provide.

[Optional:] Please could you also let me know if I am on a reserve list, and whether there is anything I should do to remain eligible.

Thank you again.

Kind regards,

Your own review, while it is fresh

  • Did I meet every eligibility rule comfortably, or only just?
  • Did my essays answer the questions asked, with specific examples?
  • Did my referees know my work well and receive what they needed in time?
  • If I was interviewed, which questions went badly, and why?
  • Is this award worth another attempt, and does it allow one?

Send the reply within a few days, keep it to a few lines, and never argue with the decision.
