PhD in Engineering of Enzyme-Catalysed Ammonia Synthesis

About the role
Fully funded PhD at Aarhus University in the interdisciplinary ENGREENIT project, developing enzyme-based reactor systems for ammonia synthesis as a green alternative to the Haber-Bosch process. The role combines biochemical engineering, reactor design, and catalysis. Preferred start date is 1 February 2027. Deadline: 9 July 2026 at 23:59 CEST.
Responsibilities
- Benchmark ammonia synthesis setups under reference conditions and compare performance metrics against existing literature.
- Develop higher-yield batch synthesis methods using nitrogenase enzymes.
- Design and operate continuous-flow reactor systems for scalable enzymatic ammonia production.
- Write conference presentations and journal articles within the ENGREENIT consortium.
- Complete the mandatory Aarhus University PhD coursework.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, biotechnology, or equivalent field with demonstrated chemistry lab safety training.
- Fluent English, both oral and written.
- Detail-oriented, with ability to work in a team-based research setting.
- Proactive problem-solving approach.
- Contact details of your Master’s thesis supervisor required for references.
Nice to have
- Prior experience with enzymatic or whole-cell biocatalysis.
- Background in electrochemical nitrogen reduction or organometallic catalysis.
- Teaching experience at any level.
- Record of publications or conference posters.
