PhD Position: Grid Stability Analysis of Renewable Electricity Systems
A full-time research & academia role at Chalmers University of Technology, based in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Closing in 3 days.
Apply on the official site before 21 Jun 2026.
About the role
Four-year fully funded PhD jointly based in Chalmers’ Division of Electric Power Engineering and Division of Energy Technology. The project examines how replacing conventional synchronous generators with converter-based wind and solar plants changes grid stability, and evaluates whether existing simulation tools (PSS/E, PowerFactory, PSCAD) can capture the new dynamics. Starting salary is SEK 35,725 per month. Deadline: 21 June 2026.
Responsibilities
- Model wind parks and battery storage units for stability analysis in large-scale power networks.
- Benchmark simulation software against each other and against real-system data.
- Complete advanced coursework in power systems and energy technology.
- Publish findings in IEEE Transactions on Power Systems or equivalent journals.
- Contribute up to 20% undergraduate teaching.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Electric Power Engineering or Energy Systems Engineering.
- Demonstrated interest in either power engineering (for energy systems graduates) or energy systems modelling (for power engineering graduates).
- Fluent English, written and spoken.
- Physical presence in Gothenburg required throughout studies; valid residence permit by start date.
Nice to have
- Experience with PowerFactory, PSS/E, PSCAD, or MATLAB/Simulink.
- Background in power system operation, control, or protection.
