About the role

The Division of Applied Acoustics in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology is hiring a doctoral student in spatial audio signal processing. The research is part of the WeHear project, funded by Horizon Europe, which focuses on advanced hearing augmentation devices. The project is international and collaborative, involving partners across Europe.

The position is a four-year employment contract at SEK 34,550 per month, extendable to five years with teaching duties of up to 20%. Supervised by Jens Ahrens (jens.ahrens@chalmers.se).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in spatial audio signal processing for augmented hearing devices, and publish findings.
  • Develop new algorithms for spatial sound capture, processing, and rendering for wearable or implantable hearing systems.
  • Complete advanced coursework through the Applied Acoustics Graduate School.
  • Collaborate with European project partners in the WeHear consortium.
  • Teach up to 20% of working hours in the Sound and Vibration MSc programme.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree (120 credits) or equivalent in electrical engineering, acoustics, mathematics, data science, or a related field.
  • Experience with digital signal processing and acoustic measurements.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB or Python.
  • Strong written and spoken English.

Nice to have

  • Background in machine learning applied to audio or speech.
  • Familiarity with psychoacoustic experimental methods.
  • Experience with Git version control.
  • Scientific writing skills in LaTeX.
