A full-time research & academia role at Chalmers University of Technology, based in Gothenburg, Sweden.
About the role
The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology is hiring a doctoral student in engineering geology, focusing on AI-enhanced groundwater modelling and decision support systems. The research targets applied problems in drinking water supply, contaminated site remediation, and underground infrastructure management in collaboration with industrial partners.
The position is a four-year employment contract with a salary of SEK 35,725 per month from May 2026. It may be extended to five years with up to 20% teaching duties. Supervised by Lars Rosén (lars.rosen@chalmers.se).
Responsibilities
- Develop numerical groundwater flow models and decision support frameworks that incorporate probabilistic and AI-based methods.
- Apply data analysis tools (Python, R, or MATLAB) to large hydrogeological datasets.
- Collaborate with industrial partners on real-world remediation and infrastructure projects.
- Write and publish scientific papers forming the doctoral thesis.
- Contribute to teaching at undergraduate level for up to 20% of working hours.
Requirements
- Master’s degree (120 credits) in Civil Engineering with a specialisation in Hydrogeology, or an equivalent qualification.
- Demonstrated experience with numerical modelling and data analysis, using Python, R, or MATLAB.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
All candidates must meet Chalmers’ general requirements for doctoral employment, including the English language proficiency standard.
Nice to have
- Experience conducting hydrogeological field investigations.
- Background in decision support systems or multi-criteria analysis.
- Proficiency in Swedish, which facilitates communication with some industrial partners.
