Postdoc in Electrochemical Synthesis of 2D Materials for Gas Sensing
A full-time research & academia role at Chalmers University of Technology, based in Gothenburg, Sweden.
About the role
The Division of Materials and Manufacture in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to develop electrochemical synthesis routes for two-dimensional materials used in gas sensing. The focus of the project is electrochemical exfoliation of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and optimisation of the resulting material properties for detection applications.
The contract is two years full-time, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Reference REF 2026-0227.
Responsibilities
- Develop and refine electrochemical exfoliation methods for the synthesis of 2D MoS2 materials.
- Conduct in-situ and advanced material characterisation using spectroscopic and microscopy techniques.
- Optimise material properties (layer count, surface chemistry, defect density) for target gas sensing performance.
- Supervise and co-supervise graduate students in the research group.
- Teach at undergraduate or master’s level for up to 20% of working hours.
Requirements
- Doctoral degree in materials science, electrochemistry, inorganic chemistry, or an equivalent field.
- Demonstrated experience in electrochemical synthesis of 2D materials.
- Strong written and spoken English skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple simultaneous experimental workflows.
The doctoral degree should have been completed within three years of the application deadline for the Meritorious candidate designation, though this is not a strict cut-off.
Nice to have
- Experience with thin film fabrication techniques.
- Prior work on gas sensing devices or sensor characterisation.
- Familiarity with spectroscopic methods (Raman, XPS, or TEM).
How to apply
Submit application materials as PDF files (maximum 40 MB each) via the online form at the apply URL above. Include:
- CV with publication list.
- Personal letter describing research experience and motivation.
Deadline: 19 July 2026. Contact the hiring department at Chalmers (Mechanical Engineering, Division of Materials and Manufacture) for scientific questions before applying.
