PhD Student: Computational Imaging for Industrial Quality Control

About the role
Four-year fully funded PhD position at CWI’s Computational Imaging Group in Amsterdam. The contract is 18 months initially, extended to a full four years after positive evaluation. The project fuses X-ray tomography and ultrasound imaging with machine learning to build computational tools for industrial quality control. Deadline 30 June 2026.
Responsibilities
- Design and run research on computational methods that combine X-ray tomography, ultrasound, and machine learning.
- Translate the techniques into real industrial quality-control workflows through consortium partners.
- Publish results in journals and present at international conferences.
- Contribute to teaching at Utrecht University, where the PhD is registered.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in applied mathematics, computational physics, computer science, or a related field with a strong computational background.
- Hands-on experience with imaging technologies and data analysis.
- Fluent English, written and spoken.
- Ability to communicate clearly across applied-mathematics and engineering disciplines.
Nice to have
- Background in machine learning frameworks for imaging, PyTorch, JAX, or similar.
- Familiarity with imaging physics, particularly tomography or ultrasound.
- Experience with industrial collaboration or translational research.
