PhD in X-Ray Thermometry for Catalysts in CO2 Conversion
A full-time research & academia role at Ghent University, based in Ghent, Belgium.
About the Role
Ghent University’s Department of Solid State Sciences is recruiting a PhD student under Professor Matthias Filez to develop the next generation of operando X-ray thermometry tools for characterising catalysts during CO2 conversion reactions. The project combines X-ray-based diagnostics, optical laser methods, and catalyst fabrication via atomic layer deposition (ALD) and physical vapor deposition (PVD). The deadline to apply is 30 August 2026.
The position is fully funded for four years under Belgian university employment conditions, with competitive PhD salary aligned with FWO scales. This is a strong opportunity for candidates interested in applied materials science addressing the energy transition.
Responsibilities
- Develop operando X-ray thermometry tools to map nanoscale heat transport in catalysts in real time
- Explore novel optical laser-based methods for non-contact temperature measurement at the nanoscale
- Fabricate catalyst samples using ALD and PVD techniques in the laboratory cleanroom
- Analyse X-ray and optical datasets using Python-based analysis pipelines
- Publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at international materials science conferences
- Supervise Master’s thesis students in experimental techniques as the project matures
Requirements
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, or a closely related quantitative field
- Programming skills in Python for data analysis and instrument control
- Interest in heterogeneous catalysis and climate-relevant chemistry
- Strong written English for publication and grant reporting
- Ability to work independently and in a collaborative laboratory setting
Nice to Have
- Experience with X-ray scattering, absorption, or diffraction techniques
- Background in thin-film deposition or surface science
- Familiarity with synchrotron beamline work
- Prior laboratory experience with catalysts or nanomaterials
