Software Engineer, Google Africa

About the role

Google’s Lagos engineering office is hiring Software Engineers across product areas (Search, YouTube, Ads, Cloud, Android). The Lagos hub focuses on Next Billion Users initiatives, building products for low-bandwidth and offline-first contexts across African markets. Application deadline 31 August 2026.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and deploy code for Google products at scale.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers across Lagos, Mountain View, London, and Zurich offices.
• Participate in code reviews, design reviews, and on-call rotations.
• Contribute to Africa-focused product initiatives in low-bandwidth optimisation and African language support.
• Mentor junior engineers and interns from African universities.

Requirements

• Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• Two or more years of professional software development experience in one or more general-purpose programming languages (Java, C++, Python, Go, JavaScript).
• Experience with data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems.
• Strong written and verbal communication in English.
• Authorisation to work in Nigeria (Google supports relocation for qualified non-Nigerian African candidates).

Nice to have

• Experience building products for mobile-first or constrained-bandwidth contexts.
• Contributions to open source projects.
• Masters or PhD in Computer Science.
• Multilingual ability (Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Swahili, French, Arabic).
