Doctoral Student in Computer Science: 6G Mobile Systems

About the role

Four-year fully funded PhD at Karlstad University, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The project focuses on 6G mobile systems, radio access network design, low-latency edge computing, and reliability mechanisms for upcoming 6G standards. Deadline 26 May 2026.

Responsibilities

• Design and evaluate protocols, scheduling algorithms, and architectures for 6G radio access.
• Build simulation models and, where possible, testbed implementations.
• Publish in IEEE journals and conferences (INFOCOM, GLOBECOM, ICC).
• Take 60 ECTS of doctoral coursework over the four-year programme.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, telecommunications, or a related field by the start date.
• Strong grounding in networking, distributed systems, or wireless communications.
• Programming proficiency in C, C++, or Python.
• Fluent English. Swedish is welcomed but not required.

Nice to have

• Background in 5G NR, OpenRAN, or mobile network simulators (ns-3, OMNeT++).
• Experience with software-defined radio or RAN hardware platforms.
• A first-author publication or workshop paper.
