Research Assistant, Data Science Laboratory

About the role

One- to two-year Research Assistant position at the Data Science Laboratory, Tampere University, one of Finland’s two top technical universities. The lab works on statistical machine learning, time-series modelling, and applications to industrial and medical data. Deadline 18 May 2026.

Responsibilities

• Build and evaluate ML pipelines on the Lab’s industrial and medical datasets.
• Pre-process and document data per the Lab’s reproducibility standards.
• Contribute to peer-reviewed papers and conference submissions.
• Support PhD students with infrastructure, code review, and experiment design.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in computer science, applied mathematics, statistics, or a related field, or in the final stages of completing one.
• Solid grounding in statistics and machine learning.
• Python proficiency, with scikit-learn and at least one deep learning framework.
• Fluent English. Finnish is welcomed but not required.

Nice to have

• A first-author paper, even at workshop level.
• Background in time-series analysis or Bayesian methods.
• Experience with HPC clusters or large-scale data pipelines.
