About the role
Two-year postdoctoral position at the University of Turku’s Language Technology group, working on Large Language Models. The group is known for the Finnish-language Poro and Viking model families and continues to push on multilingual foundation model research. Deadline 30 June 2026.
Responsibilities
- Train and evaluate LLMs at meaningful scale on national HPC resources (LUMI).
- Focus on multilingual capabilities, especially for smaller European languages.
- Publish in ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS, and ICLR.
- Mentor PhD students and contribute to open releases of models and datasets.
Requirements
- Doctoral degree in computer science, computational linguistics, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated track record in NLP or LLM research with first-author papers at top venues.
- Python and PyTorch proficiency; experience with distributed training (DeepSpeed, FSDP, Megatron-LM).
- Fluent English. Finnish, Swedish, or another European language is welcomed but not required.
Nice to have
- Hands-on experience with training models above 7B parameters.
- Prior contributions to open LLM ecosystems (datasets, tokenisers, evaluation suites).
- Familiarity with LUMI or comparable supercomputing platforms.
