About the role

Four-year, fully funded doctoral position at the Department of Information Technology, Uppsala University. The project sits within the MIDA group, supervised by Prof. Joakim Lindblad, and focuses on developing AI algorithms for cancer detection in cell and tissue samples plus treatment prediction modelling. Close collaboration with researchers at the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology and SciLifeLab is built into the project design. Start date is 1 September 2026 or by agreement. PhD candidates are employed as university staff, receiving a monthly salary, pension, and full Swedish social benefits. Deadline: 1 June 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement image analysis and machine learning methods for histopathological cancer diagnostics.
  • Develop treatment-prediction models from multi-modal clinical and imaging data.
  • Publish at peer-reviewed venues in medical image analysis and machine learning (MICCAI, CVPR, NeurIPS).
  • Complete 60 ECTS of doctoral coursework.
  • Contribute up to 20% of time to teaching and departmental duties.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in computer science, image analysis, machine learning, or a related field; minimum 90 ECTS in image analysis or ML coursework.
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and write academic English fluently.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a collaborative working style.

Nice to have

  • Prior experience with histopathological or biomedical image data.
  • Publications or preprints in medical image analysis or computer vision.
  • Knowledge of Swedish (language courses offered; not required at hire).
