Staff Backend Engineer (Node.js/Go)

About the Role

Yassir, the leading super-app in the Maghreb region backed by approximately USD 200 million in VC funding, is hiring Staff Backend Engineers for its consumer and delivery domains. The position is fully remote and open to candidates in Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, and Egypt, making it one of the most accessible senior engineering roles for Africa-based developers at a well-funded startup.

Yassir currently operates in 45 cities across Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, France, Canada, and Sub-Saharan Africa, covering ride-hailing, food delivery, financial services, and e-commerce within a single platform.

Responsibilities

• Drive technical standards for the backend across the consumer domain, working closely with multiple engineering squads
• Lead architecture decisions and maintain the technical roadmap for backend systems
• Build and scale microservices using Node.js and Go to support millions of users
• Mentor senior engineers and contribute to engineering culture and hiring practices
• Collaborate with product managers and designers to deliver high-quality features rapidly
• Participate in code reviews, system design discussions, and performance optimization

Requirements

• Six or more years of backend software engineering experience
• Strong proficiency in Node.js (required) with working knowledge of Go
• Experience designing and operating microservices at scale
• Familiarity with distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and message queues
• Excellent written English; French or Arabic is an asset for cross-regional collaboration
• Based in Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, or Egypt

Nice to Have

• Experience at a high-growth tech company handling more than one million daily active users
• Background in fintech, ride-hailing, or marketplace platforms
• Knowledge of cloud-native deployment on AWS, GCP, or Azure
• Contributions to open-source backend projects
