The supervisor matters most

For a PhD, your supervisor is the single most important factor. You will work closely with this person for years, and their guidance, style, and support will shape your experience more than the institution’s name. Before you commit, learn what you can:

• Their research. Does it genuinely overlap with what you want to do?
• Their track record. Do their students finish, publish, and go on to good positions?
• Their style. Are they hands-on or hands-off, and does that suit how you work?

Be clear on what the project actually is and whether it excites you enough to sustain years of work. Check what funding covers, for how long, and what happens if the work takes longer than planned. A project that fits your interests and comes with secure funding is worth far more than a prestigious name attached to neither.

Some things are easy to overlook and matter more than expected:

• Location and cost of living. You will live here for years, on a stipend.
• Facilities and resources. Does the group have what your research needs?
• Career support. Does the department help students move on to their next step?

Gather your options and compare them on the things that count: supervisor fit, group environment, the project itself, funding, and practical life factors. Reach out to people who are already there, because a short conversation reveals more than any prospectus.

Rank reputation last, not first. It opens some doors, but the day-to-day reality of your PhD is decided by the person you work with and the environment you work in. Choose those well, and the rest tends to follow.
