Senior Backend Engineer
A full-time engineering role at Cellulant, based in Nairobi, Kenya.
About the role
Cellulant, a pan-African payments platform processing transactions in 35+ African countries, is hiring Senior Backend Engineers for its Tingg payments product. Tingg connects merchants to all major African payment methods (mobile money, cards, bank transfers, USSD). Application deadline 15 August 2026.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain backend services for the Tingg payments platform.
- Lead technical design discussions for new payment integrations across African markets.
- Mentor mid-level engineers and review pull requests across the team.
- Operate services in production through on-call rotations.
- Partner with product, integration, and risk teams to ship new payment methods.
Requirements
- Five or more years of backend engineering experience.
- Strong proficiency in Java, Kotlin, Go, or Python and at least one major framework (Spring, Micronaut, Gin, Django).
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS or GCP), containers, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Deep understanding of databases (relational and NoSQL), distributed systems, and event-driven architectures.
- Strong written and verbal communication in English.
Nice to have
- Prior experience in payments, fintech, or telecoms.
- Knowledge of African mobile money APIs (M-Pesa Daraja, MTN MoMo, Airtel Money).
- Open source contributions or technical writing.
