About the role
The Department of Molecular Sciences at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala, is hiring a Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor in Food Biotechnology. The position is permanent (tenured) and combines research leadership with teaching at all three degree cycles. The subject area focuses on the conversion of raw materials into food products through microbial metabolic activity, including fermentation and bioprocessing. Deadline: 3 August 2026.
SLU is a research-intensive government university with a strong emphasis on agriculture, forestry, food, and environmental sciences.
Responsibilities
- Develop and lead an internationally competitive research programme in food biotechnology with a focus on microbial conversion processes.
- Teach undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral courses in food science, microbiology, and biotechnology.
- Supervise doctoral students and contribute to the development of SLU’s postgraduate programmes in Biology and Food Science.
- Secure external research funding from Swedish and European funding bodies.
- Collaborate with other SLU research groups to strengthen interdisciplinary activities.
- Build and maintain national and international networks with academia, public authorities, and food industry partners.
- Communicate research findings to broader audiences.
Requirements
- PhD in Food Science, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated research expertise in food biotechnology, particularly microbial or fermentation-based processes.
- Teaching experience and ability to deliver courses in English at BSc, MSc, and PhD levels.
- Track record of securing external research funding.
- Willingness to develop Swedish language proficiency within four years of appointment.
Nice to have
- Expertise in genomics, transcriptomics, or metabolomics applied to food microbiology.
- Experience with industrial or applied food biotechnology partnerships.
- Background in sustainability assessment of food production systems.
