About the role
Three-year, fully funded doctoral fellowship at the Department of Geosciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo. The project investigates geological processes relevant to sedimentary basin evolution, tectonic reconstruction, or geohazard assessment (the precise focus is defined on the department’s vacancy page). PhD candidates are employed as university staff on Norwegian state salary scale code 1017, with pension and full statutory social benefits. Deadline: 1 June 2026. Start date as agreed.
Responsibilities
- Conduct field campaigns for sample collection and structural mapping.
- Apply petrographic, geochemical, or geophysical laboratory methods (thin-section analysis, XRF/ICP, seismic reflection, geochronology).
- Process and interpret geological data using specialist software (Move, ArcGIS, Petrel, or equivalent).
- Submit publications to peer-reviewed geoscience journals.
- Complete the University of Oslo’s PhD programme coursework requirements (30 ECTS).
Requirements
- Master’s degree in geology, geosciences, geophysics, or a closely related earth science discipline; degree must be completed before the start date.
- Experience with at least one laboratory or analytical technique relevant to the project.
- Documented ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficient English, written and spoken.
Nice to have
- Field geology experience including solo or team-led outcrop work.
- Prior geochronology (U-Pb zircon, Ar-Ar, thermochronology) or basin modelling experience.
- Publications from Master’s thesis research or internships.
