Position closed.

The deadline (2 Jun 2026) has passed.

About the role

Three-year, fully funded doctoral fellowship at the Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo. The project investigates quantum properties of advanced semiconductor heterostructures and two-dimensional materials, with potential applications in quantum computing and next-generation electronics. PhD candidates are employed as university staff under Norwegian state salary scale, with pension, full social benefits, and 30 days of annual leave. Deadline: 2 June 2026. Start date as agreed.

Responsibilities

  • Grow and characterize semiconductor heterostructures using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) or chemical vapour deposition (CVD).
  • Perform low-temperature magneto-transport measurements and optical spectroscopy.
  • Analyse quantum phenomena including spin-orbit coupling, topological states, and superconducting proximity effects.
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals; present at international conferences.
  • Complete required coursework for the PhD degree at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in physics, materials science, nanotechnology, or a closely related field by the start date.
  • Background in semiconductor physics, condensed matter physics, or quantum materials.
  • Proficiency in data analysis using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.

Nice to have

  • Hands-on experience with thin-film growth techniques (MBE, CVD, ALD) or nanofabrication.
  • Prior exposure to low-temperature measurement setups or cryogenic systems.
  • Publications or Master’s thesis research in quantum materials or solid-state physics.

How to apply

Apply through Jobbnorge via the link above by 2 June 2026. Required documents: application letter, CV, full list of publications (if any), copies of diplomas and transcripts, and names and contact details of two referees. Applications submitted outside the Jobbnorge portal will not be considered.
