About the role

The UN Environment Programme is headquartered in Nairobi and runs the global UN response on climate change, biodiversity, pollution, and the green economy. UNEP recruits Environmental Specialists across its divisions (Ecosystems, Climate Change, Chemicals and Health, Economy, Communications, Science). Responsibilities

  • Lead technical work in your division (climate finance, biodiversity governance, plastic pollution, green economy, science-policy interface).
  • Manage projects funded by GEF, GCF, or bilateral donors.
  • Coordinate with Member States, MEA secretariats, NGOs, and academic partners.
  • Author technical reports, policy briefs, and Member State briefings.
  • Represent UNEP at intergovernmental negotiations and major scientific conferences.

Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in environmental science, public policy, economics, law, or related field.
  • Seven or more years of relevant professional experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one UNEP priority area.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English; French, Spanish, or Arabic strongly preferred.
  • UN security clearance and willingness to travel internationally.

Nice to have

  • Prior UN system, MEA secretariat, or major environmental NGO experience.
  • PhD in environmental science or related field.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
