Overview

The DAFI Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative funds refugees and asylum-seekers to pursue undergraduate study in their host country. Funded by the German Government and administered by UNHCR. Around 9,000 refugees have received DAFI scholarships across 60+ countries. Operates in countries hosting significant refugee populations: Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt, South Sudan, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, and many others. The 2027 cycle deadline at most countries is 30 September 2026.

Eligibility

  • Refugee, asylum-seeker, or stateless person recognised by UNHCR in your country of asylum.
  • Completed secondary school in your country of asylum OR brought equivalent secondary results from another country.
  • Holding (or with a credible application for) admission to a recognised university in your country of asylum.
  • Aged 28 or younger at the time of application.
  • Strong academic record at secondary level (varies by country).
  • Demonstrated financial need.

How to apply

  1. Contact UNHCR’s office in your country of asylum to confirm DAFI is available in your country (most major refugee-hosting countries qualify).
  2. Apply for admission to a recognised university in your country of asylum through the normal university admissions process.
  3. Complete the DAFI application form provided by the UNHCR country office.
  4. Submit: UNHCR refugee status documentation, academic transcripts, university admission letter, motivation statement, and one reference.
  5. Submit through UNHCR by 30 September 2026 (deadlines vary slightly by country).
  6. Final scholars are announced by January 2027 for academic year starting between February and September 2027.
