Overview

The Fulbright Visiting Research Scholar Program sends South African academics, researchers, and senior professionals to a U.S. host institution for three to ten months of independent research. The award is fully funded by the U.S. government and is one of the most prestigious visiting-scholar tracks for South African researchers. The 2027/28 cycle closes 30 August 2026.

Eligibility

  • South African citizen, resident in South Africa at the time of application.
  • Doctoral degree completed before the start of the Fellowship.
  • Affiliation with a recognised South African research institution or university.
  • Concrete research project to be pursued at a U.S. host (you need an invitation letter from a U.S. host before submitting).
  • Strong English (Fulbright is conducted in English).
  • Commitment to return to South Africa for at least two years after the Fellowship.

How to apply

  1. Identify a U.S. host institution and reach out to potential supervisors at least three months before the deadline.
  2. Open the U.S. Embassy in South Africa Fulbright page at the source link to download the cycle’s application package.
  3. Complete the Fulbright Visiting Scholar online application (CIES portal) with project statement, CV, references, host invitation letter, and proof of South African affiliation.
  4. Submit before 30 August 2026.
  5. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed in October 2026. Final selections are announced by April 2027 for placement starting between July 2027 and February 2028.
