Where there are hopeful applicants and real money, there are scams. Scholarship fraud is common, and it is designed to look legitimate. Knowing the warning signs protects both your money and your personal information.

• An application fee. Genuine scholarships do not charge you to apply. If someone asks for a payment to process, release, or guarantee an award, it is a scam.
• A guarantee. No real programme promises you will win in advance. Selection is a decision made by a committee after applications close.
• Pressure to act now. Fake urgency, such as a prize that expires today unless you pay, is a manipulation tactic.
• Requests for sensitive details. No legitimate scholarship needs your bank password, full card number, or a copy of documents unrelated to eligibility at the application stage.
• You never applied. If you are told you won an award you never entered, it is not real.

How to verify an award is genuine

When an opportunity looks promising, take a few minutes to check it before you act.

• Find the official source. Search for the funder’s own website rather than trusting a link in a message. Confirm the scholarship is listed there with the same details.
• Check the contact details. Real programmes use official email domains, not free personal addresses. Be wary of poor spelling and generic greetings.
• Look for a clear selection process. Legitimate awards explain who is eligible, what you submit, and how winners are chosen.
• Search the name plus the word scam. If others have been caught out, you will often find warnings.

If something feels off

Trust that instinct. Do not pay, do not share financial details, and do not send documents until you have confirmed the award is real through the official source. If you have already shared sensitive information, act quickly. Change any exposed passwords, and if you shared financial details, contact your bank.
