Senior Software Engineer (Remote, Africa)

About the role

Andela connects African and global engineering talent with US and European companies on long-term remote contracts. Senior Software Engineers are placed with one client company at a time for engagements of 6 to 24 months. Roles span backend (Node, Python, Java, Go), frontend (React, Vue, Angular), full-stack, mobile (React Native, Swift, Kotlin), data engineering, and DevOps. Compensation is in USD, paid into your home country in local currency or USD, and competitive with US remote-engineering benchmarks for the African market.

Responsibilities

• Build features end-to-end on the client’s codebase, working alongside the client’s internal team during their working hours.
• Write production-quality code with tests, code review, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Participate in design discussions, on-call rotations (where applicable), and incident response.
• Mentor junior engineers in the client team or in the Andela community.
• Maintain consistent overlap with client time zone (typically 4 to 6 hours per day during US East Coast or Western European hours).

Requirements

• Five or more years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong proficiency in at least one modern programming language (Python, Java, Go, JavaScript/TypeScript, Ruby, or C#).
• Production experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
• Solid testing, code review, and version control fundamentals.
• Fluent written and spoken English.
• Available to work in overlap with US Eastern (EST/EDT) or Central European (CET/CEST) hours.
• Resident in Africa, the Middle East, or Europe.

Nice to have

• Open-source contributions or visible technical writing.
• Domain experience in fintech, climate tech, healthtech, or developer tools.
• Prior remote work experience with US or European companies.
• Bachelor’s or higher in computer science (not required, but helpful for some clients).
