Engineering Manager

About the role

Chipper Cash is a cross-border payments company operating in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Africa, the UK, and the US. The Engineering Manager leads a backend team of six to ten engineers building cross-border transfer, card, and investment products. Application deadline 31 August 2026.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of six to ten engineers covering hiring, performance, growth, and execution.
• Partner with product, design, and other engineering leads to ship roadmap features.
• Own service operations including SLOs, on-call rotation, and incident response.
• Set technical direction in collaboration with the team’s tech leads.
• Contribute to platform-wide initiatives (developer productivity, observability, security).

Requirements

• Seven or more years of professional software engineering experience and two or more years managing engineers.
• Hands-on technical depth in backend systems (Go, Node, Python, or Java) and cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP).
• Track record of shipping consumer-facing financial products at scale.
• Excellent written communication and the ability to operate fully remote across multiple time zones.
• Authorisation to work in any Chipper Cash market.

Nice to have

• Prior experience at an African fintech, neobank, or cross-border payments company.
• Compliance or risk-management background.
• Familiarity with PCI-DSS, AML, and KYC requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
