About the role
Wave Mobile Money is a mobile money company operating in Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso, Uganda, and The Gambia, known for free peer-to-peer transfers and 1 percent withdrawal fees. Wave is hiring remote Software Engineers across backend, mobile, and infrastructure teams to scale the platform across francophone and anglophone Africa. Application deadline 30 September 2026.
Responsibilities
- Design and ship features for the Wave consumer mobile app, agent app, or core backend services.
- Operate services in production through on-call rotations.
- Participate in design reviews, code reviews, and architectural decisions.
- Collaborate asynchronously with engineers across multiple time zones (West Africa, East Africa, Europe, US).
- Contribute to Wave’s open-by-default engineering culture (RFCs, postmortems, internal wikis).
Requirements
- Three or more years of professional software engineering experience.
- Proficiency in Haskell, Python, Kotlin, or Swift (Wave’s backend is largely Haskell with Python for tooling).
- Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and systems design.
- Comfort with asynchronous, written collaboration.
- Authorisation to work somewhere in Africa or Europe (Wave hires remote across both regions).
Nice to have
- Experience with functional programming.
- Background in payments or financial systems.
- French language ability (most Wave markets are francophone).
