DevOps Engineer

About the role

Carry1st is Africa’s leading publisher of mobile games and digital content, operating at the intersection of gaming, publishing, and fintech. The company serves players across Africa and global frontier markets, running infrastructure for live game operations, payment processing, and content delivery. This fully remote DevOps Engineer position is open to candidates anywhere within a 4-hour time difference from South Africa (UTC+2). The role focuses on reliability, deployment automation, and scaling infrastructure to support millions of concurrent game sessions and transactions. No advertised closing date; rolling applications.

Responsibilities

• Manage and scale Kubernetes clusters and containerised workloads serving Carry1st’s game and payments platforms.
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and related tooling; reduce deployment friction for product and engineering teams.
• Maintain and improve AWS infrastructure using Terraform; implement cost optimisation and availability improvements.
• Manage message queue systems (RabbitMQ) and relational databases (PostgreSQL) in production.
• Develop operational scripts and automation in Python, Groovy, or Golang.
• Monitor system health using Prometheus, Grafana, or similar; set SLOs and respond to incidents.
• Work on secrets management and security posture using Vault and AWS IAM.

Requirements

• 4 or more years working as a DevOps or SRE engineer in an AWS environment.
• Hands-on Kubernetes experience: cluster management, networking, autoscaling, and upgrades.
• Terraform proficiency: writing reusable modules, managing state, and applying changes safely in production.
• Experience with RabbitMQ, PostgreSQL, and CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins preferred).
• Ability to write automation scripts in Python, Groovy, or Golang.
• Remote collaboration skills; must operate within a 4-hour window of South Africa (CAT) during core hours.

Nice to have

• Experience with gaming platforms, real-time game infrastructure, or mobile app back ends.
• Knowledge of Vault for secrets management.
• Familiarity with fintech or payments compliance requirements.
• Background in high-availability, multi-region deployments.
