Postdoc in Mathematics with Focus on Educational Science

About the role
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg is hiring a postdoctoral researcher to lead practice-based school research in mathematics. The role builds Chalmers’ partnership with upper secondary schools, co-designing and running research projects together with mathematics teachers. The expected start date is November 2026 or by agreement.
The contract is two years full-time (reference REF 2026-0258). Supervised jointly by Daniel Persson (daniel.persson@chalmers.se) and Philip Gerlee (gerlee@chalmers.se).
Responsibilities
- Initiate, plan, and execute practice-based research in mathematics alongside upper secondary school teachers.
- Develop and sustain Chalmers’ school research initiative, including relationships with local schools.
- Co-author peer-reviewed publications on mathematics education and learning.
- Supervise master’s students in mathematics and related programmes.
- Teach at undergraduate or master’s level as part of the normal working allocation.
Requirements
- Doctoral degree in mathematics, mathematics education, or learning in mathematics.
- Strong written and spoken English.
- Ability to communicate mathematical ideas clearly to both academic and school audiences.
Nice to have
- A teaching qualification and classroom experience in mathematics.
- Prior practice-based or design-based research experience in educational settings.
- Proficiency in Swedish, which is useful for school partnerships.
- Strong mathematical background supporting interdisciplinary work.
- Familiarity with quantitative research methods and learning analytics.
