  • Advise and mentor graduate students on research projects and thesis work.
  • (Research-track) Establish and lead an independent research group; pursue external funding from agencies such as NSF, USAID, Gates Foundation, or EU Horizon.
  • (Research-track) Publish in peer-reviewed venues and collaborate with CMU main campus faculty in Pittsburgh.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and programme assessment.
  • Engage with the Kigali technology and innovation ecosystem, including government, industry, and civil society partners.

Requirements

  • PhD from a leading research university in computer science, electrical engineering, information systems, or a closely related field.
  • For research-track: a strong publication record in a relevant technical area (AI/ML, networks, security, systems, HCI, or allied fields).
  • For teaching-track: demonstrated excellence in teaching at the graduate level.
  • Passion for Africa’s digital transformation and commitment to the CMU-Africa mission.
  • Ability to build collaborative research or teaching relationships across institutions and cultures.

Nice to have

  • Prior experience in Africa or other low-resource or emerging-market technology contexts.
  • Industry experience in technology companies or startups alongside academic work.
  • Existing grant funding or active external research collaborations.
  • Proficiency in French (Kinyarwanda or Swahili also valued).
