About the role

Engineering Manager position at Paystack (a Stripe company), leading a team of 5 to 8 backend engineers building the core payments platform. Paystack processes a significant share of African e-commerce payments and powers checkout for tens of thousands of African merchants. The role is fully remote within Africa, with quarterly team gatherings in Lagos, Accra, or Nairobi. Application deadline 30 June 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of 5 to 8 backend engineers working on payments infrastructure: card processing, bank transfers, reconciliation, fraud signals.
  • Set technical direction in collaboration with senior engineers and the VP of Engineering.
  • Conduct one-on-ones, performance reviews, and growth planning for direct reports.
  • Partner with product managers on roadmap, scoping, and prioritisation.
  • Drive on-call rotations, incident reviews, and post-mortems.
  • Continue to spend ~20 percent of your time on hands-on code review and technical architecture.

Requirements

  • Six or more years of software engineering experience with at least two years managing engineers.
  • Production experience with backend systems at scale (PHP, Python, Go, or similar) and a major cloud platform (AWS preferred).
  • Track record of shipping reliable systems in regulated or high-stakes environments (payments, banking, healthcare, infrastructure).
  • Strong communication skills and proven ability to mentor mid-level engineers into seniors.
  • Resident in Africa and able to work overlapping hours with the Paystack core team (GMT to GMT+3).

Nice to have

  • Prior fintech, payments, or banking engineering experience.
  • Familiarity with African payment rails (NIBSS, GhIPSS, mobile money APIs) or international schemes (Visa, Mastercard, ISO 8583).
  • Open-source contributions or technical writing.
  • Bachelor’s or higher in computer science or software engineering.
