Overview

The Marshall Scholarship funds U.S. citizens to pursue graduate study at any university in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1953 under the Marshall Aid Commemoration Act, the programme honours the Marshall Plan that helped rebuild post-war Europe. Up to 50 scholars are selected each year from a highly competitive national applicant pool. Awards are tenable for most Masters and PhD programmes at any UK institution. National application deadline: 29 September 2026 for the 2027 cohort starting September 2027.

Eligibility

  • US citizen at the time of application.
  • Holds, or will hold by September 2026, a first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year US college or university.
  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.
  • Graduated from the first undergraduate institution no earlier than April 2024.
  • Has not previously studied for or received a degree from a British university.
  • Candidates cannot apply independently; all applications require institutional nomination. Most fields and disciplines are eligible.

How to apply

  1. Contact your undergraduate institution’s fellowship or nominations office well in advance of the national deadline, since most internal campus deadlines fall in July or August 2026.
  2. Complete the online Marshall application through your institution’s submission portal.
  3. Assemble supporting materials: academic transcripts, personal statement, three academic references, and a statement of proposed study at a named UK university.
  4. Submit through your institution, which endorses and forwards the nomination by 29 September 2026 at 17:00 Eastern Time.
  5. Shortlisted candidates attend regional interviews in November 2026. Award decisions are announced in December 2026 for September 2027 start.
