Overview

The Mawazo PhD Scholars Programme funds early-career African women PhD candidates whose research addresses pressing development challenges in Africa. The programme combines small-grant funding, structured mentorship, leadership training, and visibility through Mawazo Institute’s media partnerships. Around 15 to 20 PhD Scholars selected per cohort. The 2027 cycle closes 30 September 2026.

Eligibility

  • Woman currently enrolled in a PhD programme at any African university OR a PhD programme outside Africa where the research is on African issues.
  • African citizen or African resident (current PhD must be in Africa or focused on Africa).
  • PhD research aligned with a key development challenge in Africa: health, agriculture, climate, education, governance, gender.
  • Strong commitment to public engagement and policy impact, not only academic publication.
  • Available for monthly virtual sessions and one in-person Nairobi convening.

How to apply

  2. Complete the online application: CV, research proposal abstract (1,000 words), public engagement plan, two references.
  3. Submit before 30 September 2026.
  4. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed by video in November-December 2026.
  5. Final Scholars are announced by January 2027 for the programme starting in March 2027.
