Overview

The New Zealand International Scholarships (NZIS) fund students from developing countries to pursue postgraduate study at New Zealand universities. The programme has two main streams: Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships (for residents of eligible developing countries) and the New Zealand Pacific Scholarships. African candidates apply through the Manaaki stream. Around 200 to 300 awards per cycle. The 2027 cycle closes 15 September 2026 at most country offices.

Eligibility

  • Citizen of an eligible developing country (most of Africa qualifies; check the country list).
  • Aged 18 to 39 at the time of application.
  • Minimum 2 years of work experience post-Bachelor’s degree.
  • Bachelor’s degree with strong upper-second or first-class honours.
  • English proficiency: IELTS 6.5 (Masters) or 7.0 (PhD); native speakers exempt.
  • Not married to or in a long-term relationship with a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
  • Commitment to return to home country for at least 2 years after completing studies.

How to apply

  1. Open the New Zealand MFAT scholarships page at the source link.
  2. Apply for admission to your chosen New Zealand Masters or PhD programme separately.
  3. Apply for the NZIS through the online portal: academic transcripts, English language certificate, two references, development impact statement, and return-to-home undertaking.
  4. Submit before 15 September 2026 (date may vary by country office).
  5. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed at the nearest New Zealand High Commission. Final scholars are announced by January 2027 for February 2027 academic year start.
