Overview

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Pretoria funds undergraduate and postgraduate study for academically strong African students from financially constrained backgrounds. Pretoria is one of South Africa’s largest research universities. Beyond the cash, scholars get the full Mastercard cohort experience: mentorship, leadership development, internship support, and a give-back commitment. Undergraduate deadline 31 August 2026; postgraduate deadline 30 September 2026.

Eligibility

  • African national from any African country.
  • Demonstrated financial need (documented family income, household circumstances).
  • Strong academic record: top decile at secondary level for undergraduate entry, first-class or strong upper-second at undergraduate level for postgraduate entry.
  • Demonstrated leadership and community engagement (not just grades).
  • Commitment to return to your home country or another African country to contribute after graduation.
  • Under 29 for undergraduate entry, no fixed age cap for postgraduate.

How to apply

  1. Apply for admission to a Pretoria undergraduate or postgraduate programme first through the standard Pretoria admissions portal.
  2. Open the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program page at the source link and complete the scholarship application.
  3. Submit: academic records, financial-need documentation, two references, a personal statement on motivation and leadership, and a post-graduation plan.
  4. Undergraduate applicants: submit before 31 August 2026.
  5. Postgraduate applicants: submit before 30 September 2026.
  6. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed; final cohort is announced by November or December 2026 for entry in February 2027.
